Building Code Updates Approved

On September 3 the Greeley City Council unanimously adopted recommended updates to the City’s building codes after a brief public hearing with one exception. The residential sprinkler provision for fire suppression in single-family homes and duplexes, which had been recommended by staff, had been removed during the first reading of the ordinance after objections were raised by the Greeley Area REALTOR® Association and the Northern Colorado Home Builders Association.

Greeley would’ve been the first city in Northern Colorado to require fire sprinklers in single-family homes. It was estimated the sprinklers would increase the cost of a new home by a minimum of $3,000. These facts were used to convince the City Council to eliminate the proposed sprinkler mandate.

GARA Candidate Endorsements

The Greeley Area REALTOR® Association will support two incumbents in the City Council election – Mayor John Gates and Dale Hall (Ward IV). Both candidates have a record of supporting issues of importance to the real estate industry. In addition, GARA will endorse REALTOR® Kristen Zasada for an at-large seat. Voters will select two candidates for the at-large seats but GARA’s Board determined that only Zasada was worthy of support. In addition, GARA chose not to support a candidate in the Ward 1 race.
