Longmont: A Host of Familiar Faces Running for Council

Former Longmont Mayor Roger Lange announced he will run again for mayor this fall. He served one term (2007-2009) before losing to Bryan Baum. Charlie Plagainos, an ethics consultant, filed candidacy paperwork for the mayor’s seat last month. Plagainos was the Republican candidate for the Colorado Legislature’s Senate District 17 seat in 2012 and the Colorado House District 11 seat in 2014. He lost both those elections to the Democrats in those races. Veronique Bellamy, a Green Party member who earlier announced her plan to run for mayor, has withdrawn from the race.

Another former Councilman, Ron Gallegos, declared his intent to run for an at-large seat. Gallegos served Ward 3 from 1995 to 1999 and ran unsuccessfully in 2011, 2013 and 2015. Two at-large seats are available this fall, one is held by term-limited Gabe Santos and the other by Polly Christensen, who is eligible to run for another four-year term. Note: Candidate petitions are due August 28 at 5:00 pm., so there’s plenty of time for more candidates to emerge.
