The Larimer County Commissioners voted to add a question to the November ballot asking to exempt the County from SB-152 which prohibits local governments from involvement in broadband efforts. Estes Park, Loveland, Fort Collins, and Wellington voters approved similar measures.
If passed, the measure would allow the County to support broadband efforts within its municipalities and in unincorporated areas. In the past, there’s been talk about using existing Platte River Power Authority’s fiber optic capacity to create a broadband network that could offer a low-cost alternative to Comcast. Furthermore, this initiative could deliver broadband to rural parts of the County that currently have no broadband.
