A group has formed with the intent of forcing a special election on an ordinance approved by City Council on April 5. The group led by local activist Jeffrey Hare is called STOPP (Stop Taxes on Private Projects) and the ordinance they oppose authorized the City’s lease on the 919 7th Street property for a hotel and conference center. STOPP has to collect 1,602 signatures by May 5 to force the election. STOPP argues the City Council wasn’t transparent during the four-year planning process to create the project and using taxpayer dollars to invest in private industry is wrong.
