City of Greeley Revises Sex Offender Residency Restrictions

Local governments, including Greeley, have laws limiting the residential proximity of registered sex offenders to schools, parks, playgrounds and recreation centers in an effort to protect children. A recent lawsuit in another Colorado town led the Greeley City Council to revise its law to avoid liability. The ordinance, passed by the Council on Feb. 4th, changes the residency limit to one city block (300 feet rather than 750 feet) and adds language specifying that the requirement affects only sex offenders convicted of crimes against minors. While the whole subject of sex offenders is uncomfortable for many of us, it is important for REALTORS to know about this law as to appropriately advise clients.
