Anti-Fracking Movement Portent of Things to Come?

It started last year in Longmont with Ballot Question 300, which put a moratorium on hydraulic fracking. The idea has gained momentum with environmentalists and encouraged them to take the issue elsewhere in our region.

In this year’s election Fort Collins and Lafayette passed similar measures. The vote in Broomfield remains to close to call at this point. Does it matter to REALTORS? That is, of course, debatable. However, it can be argued that this is the beginning of a shift towards an emphasis on environmental issues. It’s easy to say it’s not a property rights issue – unless you hold the mineral rights for a parcel that is no longer practical to drill. Is fracking the call to action that politically mobilizes those whose priorities would focus on environmental issues rather than economic development?  Time will tell.
