City Manager Bill Cahill and Chief Building Official Tom Hawkinson meet with LBAR’s Government Affairs Committee to discuss unpermitted residential building in Loveland. There was consensus that safety is not negotiable but that efforts to increase compliance should be considered.
Tom Hawkinson will continue to meet with the Government Affairs Committee to sketch out two preliminary proposals. One program would be primarily educational and designed to help homeowners understand why it is more cost-effective to adhere to City laws and get the required permits prior to construction. The second program would incentivize homeowners to get illegal work permitted to make sure such homes are safe and reduce the likelihood of problems during resale. After review by City staff and various City boards and commissions, the City Council would have the final say in whether or not the proposals are implemented.
