RTD announced it will conduct a $2 million study to evaluate mobility options in the northwest Denver-Boulder metropolitan area, including a potential extension of the North Line to Longmont and bus rapid transit (BRT) opportunities. The Northwest Area Mobility Study (NAMS) is designed to develop consensus among the agency, the Colorado Department of Transportation and northwest-corridor stakeholders to decide what improvements would be cost-effective.
Since the agency announced that it would be unable to finish the Northwest rail line on time in 2014, elected officials representing the affect towns have split into two factions supporting two different modalities – commuter rail and BRT. Observers say that without the study, there’s no way to move the line forward even though it will add another year to the timeline.
