The City Council approved two ordinances approving the adoption of the 2012 Building Codes. As had been previously reported, the requirement to increase insulation in attics (R49) and walls (R20) are thought to be the most expensive aspects for new residential construction although building inspectors argue the energy cost savings will quickly outweigh the additional expense.
The 2009 version of the Residential Building Code was controversial because of the mandate to include fire suppression sprinklers in all new residential construction. Most jurisdictions opted to defer that requirement until 2013 (or delete the provision entirely). Longmont’s 2012 code defers the sprinkler requirement until 2016, which follows a recommendation of a statewide committee of construction and safety officials.
